The City of Sandusky officially opened its new six-court outdoor tennis complex on Monday, August 11, 2025, marking the culmination of a multi-year planning, funding, and construction effort. The celebration took place just before the first scheduled match on the new courts between the St. Mary Central Catholic High School and Sandusky High School girls’ tennis teams.
City Commission President Dick Brady welcomed guests and thanked the many partners who helped bring the project to life. Longtime Sandusky tennis coach and Sandusky Recreation Board member Bernie Seiler then delivered the ceremonial first serve following the ribbon cutting.
“These courts are the result of strong partnerships and a shared vision for recreation in Sandusky," said Sandusky City Manager John Orzech. "They’ll serve athletes, students, and residents for years to come, and I’m proud of the teamwork that made this possible.”

Built in 1936 at a cost of $100,000, the stadium, later known as Strobel Field, was a Works Progress Administration project. A 1937 Fram article described the reinforced concrete structure as 37 feet high and 200 feet in length, with a seating capacity between 5,600 and 6,000.
The facility featured a press box, broadcasting booth, two locker rooms, training rooms, and a coaches’ dugout. A quarter-mile running track encircled the football field, and electric lighting made night games possible, an advanced feature for its time.
