The St. Mary Central Catholic Panthers showed resilience on the road Saturday, battling back after an early deficit but ultimately falling to Toledo Christian, 8-5. The game’s turning point came in the opening inning, when Toledo Christian capitalized on early opportunities to score eight runs. Despite the tough start, the Panthers responded with composure and chipped away at the lead over the next several innings. SMCC got on the board in the first and continued to apply pressure, scoring runs in four of the first four innings. The Panthers plated single runs in each of the first three frames before adding two more in the fourth, cutting into the deficit and keeping the game within reach. Offensively, SMCC collected eight hits and showed discipline at the plate with six walks. Grant Swain led the way with a strong performance, going 2-for-3, while multiple Panthers contributed timely hits and aggressive baserunning. The team was especially active on the bases, with Blake Finneran swiping three bags and Sam Lawrence adding two stolen bases. On the mound, the Panthers settled in after the first inning. Adam Burch provided a strong relief effort, tossing four shutout innings and allowing just three hits while helping keep Toledo Christian off the board the rest of the way. Despite outscoring Toledo Christian 5-0 after the first inning, the early gap proved too much to overcome.
